Senior Chinese official Meng Hongwei elected as President of Interpol

China's Vice Public Security Minister, Meng Hongwei, has been chosen as the new President of Interpol. Meng won the election by a wide margin at the agency's 85th members' meeting in Indonesia. He will serve a four-year term.

Meng promised to work together with all member states of Interpol, to build the international group into a stronger platform for global police cooperation.

He is the first Chinese official to take the post. China's foreign ministry has sent its congratulations to Meng.

"We express warm congratulations to Vice Minister for Public Security Meng Hongwei, on his election by a wide margin as the new president of Interpol during the organization's 85th General Assembly," said Lu Kang, spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry.

"For many years, China has been working well and productively with Interpol and its member countries in law enforcement. We place a high value on the important role of Interpol in this field, and are willing to push forward global cooperation, and take on more responsibilities."
