Sun Yat-sen was born in Guangdong province in 1866. As the provincial capital, Guangzhou witnessed an important part of Sun’s political life and his work to unite the Chinese nation.
During his twenties, Sun Yat-sen studied medicine in Guangzhou and other cities including Hong Kong. He had also started getting to know some revolutionary members by this time.
During the period 1895 to 1911, Sun and his fellow revolutionaries planned and held three uprisings in Guangzhou against the Qing dynasty. These eventually led to the Chinese democratic revolution and put an end to feudality.
"Dr Sun Yat-sen dedicated all himself to Chinese nation’s unity, and it’s also our responsibility today to boost our country’s prosperity," said Chen Xin, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
In 1921, Sun was appointed as the special president of the Republic of China. His office in Guangzhou was destroyed in the war and then rebuilt into a memorial hall. People come here to pay tribute to the great revolutionary pioneer.
"I’m proud to be a student here, Dr. Sun Yat-sen has always been our role model," said Xiao Yao, student from Sun Yat-sen University.
"Our university motto is put forward by Dr.Sun, that’s to study intensively and practice earnestly," said Yao Aili, student from Sun Yat-sen University.
