Full coverage: World Heritage China

Another site from China has been inscribed as a world heritage. The Zheng Guo Canal Irrigation System, in northern China’s Shaanxi province, was announced as one of the world’s Heritage Irrigation Structures by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage.

The world committee announced the inclusion on Tuesday in Chiengmai, Thailand. Zhengguo Canal is located in Jingyang County, a suburb of the city of Xianyang. It was named after its designer Zheng Guo, an architect from South Korea. 

Construction of the system began in 246 BC, and lasted for 10 years. Since its completion, it has irrigated the Guanzhong plain, north of Xi’an. It has also been honored as one of the largest irrigation systems in ancient China. 

The project was inscribed into the list of world heritage irrigation structures for its contribution to the increase of the grain yield. Its design, scale, and area of irrigation were all considered advanced for its era.
