China's leading online retailer JD.com is employing unmanned distribution vehicles to deliver its packages in an effort to enhance the company's logistics efficiency.

A driverless vehicle carrying packages purchased from JD.com is running on planned routes to consumers. The vehicle can avoid pedestrians, pets and cars. It also sends a message to the package recipient upon arrival and the buyers then can claim their purchases simply by entering a code included in the message.

"Driverless cars are a part of JD.com's logistics strategy. It can effectively reduce the logistic costs, and at the same time supplement insufficient labor. We may largely increase the delivery efficiency of driverless cars, and use them in some ideal circumstances. For example, driverless cars may completely replace human deliveries in some regions with flat roads." Said Fan Chen, engineer of JD.com.

In addition to driverless cars, drones are also used for deliveries in rural areas. Meanwhile, JD.com is establishing other unmanned facilities to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

"We not only have driverless cars and drones, but also automated warehouse and distribution terminals. Take the logistics in rural areas as an example, we can reduce the logistic costs by over 70 percent through drones and driverless cars. In the past, farmers faced difficulties in selling their products, and a key to the problems is high logistics costs. With the use of unmanned vehicles and facilities, we can reduce the price gap and solve the problem." JD.com's CEO Liu Qiangdong said.

Liu said JD.com will arrange unmanned distributions in larger areas in the following two years. Liu says that will help the company increase its logistic efficiency by more than three times.
