The West Bund Art & Design Fair, now in its third edition, has kicked off in Shanghai. With 31 galleries both local and international, the number of booths is the same as last year, but this time there are many new faces and the fair has a more global footprint as well.

Nearly 2000 art pieces are collected at the West Bund Art Center, re-constructed from an airplane warehouse.

Unlike the traffic thoroughfares of the mega fairs like Art Basel, the aisles at the boutique West Bund are calm and focused.

In this corner, many visitors are confused about the exhibit, wondering whether it's been put here by mistake.

Actually this is an art piece, created by American artist Virginia Overton. She found the materials in a construction site in New York and combined them together in an artistic way.

"The price varies from several thousand to ten thousands dollars. She put her art inspiration onto these used materials she found. It takes wisdom to pick the materials, as well as which ones to put together," said Zhou Xiaowen, director of Sasian Branch of "White Cube" Gallery.

The works selected for the Art & Design Fair demonstrate the multiplicity of contemporary art which has broken away from, as well as built upon, traditional schools.

The fair runs through November 13.
