Overseas Chinese have also been honoring Doctor Sun in various ways.

"We gather here to commemorate Mr. Sun Yat-sen and to make his spirit known to more people, calling for Chinese nationals living overseas to come together for the unification of our motherland. This is what all overseas Chinese people desire, and this is why we honor him now," said Li Hongwei, chairman of Chinese American Alliance for China's Peaceful Reunification.

"Sun Yat-sen had a lot of relationships with Chinese people in Russia and the former Soviet Union. Now we have to carry on his spiritual legacy for generations to come, including his patriotism, perseverance and enterprise," said Wu Hao, overseas Chinese in Russia.

Sun Yat-sen visited Chicago three times and called on Chinese people living abroad to contribute to China's democratic revolution.  In a park named after Sun in Chicago's Chinatown, participants laid wreaths at his bust and called for China's unification. In Russia, the Chinese community has held a photo exhibition and seminars.  The focus was on China's revolutionary history and how Sun overthrew the Qing Dynasty to establish the Republic of China.
