The election result in the US has already had ramifications for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free-trade proposal which aims to connnect the United States with 11 other Asia-Pacific countries, but not including China.

The Obama administration announced it is to suspend its efforts to win congressional approval for the deal after months of lobbying on Capitol Hill. That means the fate of the deal now essentially rests in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers.

Obama will explain this decision to leaders of the 11 other countries in Peru next week. Its future would seem to be in peril, however, as Trump has been quite vocal in his criticism of it.
