Meanwhile in neighbouring Iraq, security forces have gone on the offensive again. This is after a week of consolidating gains made during the offensive to recapture Mosul. But each day brings news of more atrocities carried out by ISIL.

Each day a small advance for Iraqi security forces in Mosul and each day reports of another civilian massacre by ISIL.

Since the operation to recapture Mosul began, hundreds of people have reportedly been murdered by ISIL often for possessing a mobile phone or SIM card or for no reason at all.

The United Nations says it's a tactic to control a population being used as a human shield.

There are concerns executions could escalate as the fighting again intensifies.

South of Mosul, Iraqi armed forces targeted ISIL remnants with heavy artillery and machine guns.

"We are targeting Islamic State militants, the rapid response team with support by the Ninth Regiment. God willing, not much is left, we will capture it all. We want to give the people of Mosul the good news: Soon we will liberate you all," said Munir Abdelwahed, Iraqi soldier.

Nearby lay bodies the soldiers claimed were ISIL combatants.

"These bodies belong to ISIL fighters, who were here wearing suicide belts. We hit them with an air strike and with a missile," said Hassan Lazem, Iraqi soldier.

The operation to retake Mosul has entered its fourth week, but the army so far has gained just a small foothold in the city.

The United Nations says ISIL has been stockpiling ammonia and sulfur in civilian areas, possibly for use as chemical weapons.
