The Vice Chairman of China's top political advisory body - the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Tung Chee-hwa, has spoken out on the recent incident at the Hong Kong Legislative Council. He warned against any challenge to sovereignty issues like the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, as it is the foundation of the Special Administrative Region.

"The pro-independence forces' attempt to separate Hong Kong from China is not only a matter of national security and territorial integrity, it also damages the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle and goes against the interests of Hong Kong citizens. 'One Country, Two Systems' and the Basic Law are the development foundation of Hong Kong. Any deviation will result in great damage. So we should stick to our foundation and prevent this small handful of pro-independence forces from damaging our region," Tung said.

The former Hong Kong SAR chief executive added that an overwhelming majority of Hong Kong citizens are opposed to the behavior of some legislators-elect, and opt for national unity, leaving no "market" for the so-called "Hong Kong Independence" movement. Tung said he is fully confident in Hong Kong's future and the wisdom and patriotism of its people over matters of principle. He said the Central government always remains determined to hold onto the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. Meanwhile the Deputy Director of the Hong Kong SAR Basic Law Committee of China's top legislature - National People's Congress Standing Committee, also voiced her anger towards "Hong Kong Independence" advocates.

"The aim of 'One Country, Two Systems' is to safeguard our country's unity, territorial integrity and national security. So it's a total violation of the bottom line of the 'One Country, Two Systems', those legislators-elect boasting about 'Hong Kong independence'," said Elsie Leung, deputy director of HK SAR Basic Law Committee, NPC Standing Committee.
