International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has been in Doha, looking at its new sporting facilities with the city hoping to be considered as a potential host for future games.

Bach said he “could imagine” the Qatari Capital holding the multi-sport event, despite failing with two previous bids in the past.

Qatar’s standing in the world of sport has improved in recent years, mainly thanks to its successful bid to host soccer’s World Cup in 2022.

The former fencer enjoyed a look around the relatively new Aspire Academy, which produced the entire football squad that won the 2014 AFC under-19 championship in Myanmar. If the senior team is successful in its campaign to reach Russia in two years time, it will be their first appearance on the global stage.

In terms of the Olympics, Bach is more than open to the idea of bringing the games to the Middle Eastern country in years to come.

“This is up to Qatar to be a candidate for the Olympic Games. We have now the procedure is underway for the next editions of the Olympic Games, but then one day, I can imagine Qatar will be a candidate for hosting the Olympic Games,” Bach said.
