Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in Peru for a state visit and the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation is the world’s largest trade association and consists of 21 Pacific Rim member economies.

Lima, the capital of Peru and the country’s commercial and industrial center, is set to be the focus of global attention. The November meeting marks the second time Peru’s capital will host the APEC Leaders’ Meeting. Lima previously hosted the meeting in 2008.

The Peruvian government has made great efforts to present the city’s best appearance, with newly revamped buildings, parks and a strong deployment of security personnel in the main streets of the capital city. Because of the importance of the event, Peru is beefing up security measures to ensure the safety of APEC leaders, ministers and business delegations.

Under the theme of “Quality growth and human development,” the 21 APEC member economies will gather together to facilitate trade and investment as well as consolidate liberalization policies. They will exchange views on issues including regional economic integration, the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) connectivity, food security, strengthening micro, small and medium-sized businesses, human capital development and service sector cooperation. A consensus will be laid out in the leaders’ declaration issued after the meeting.

The 21 members of APEC account for 39 percent of the world’s population, constitute half of global trade and 60 percent of the world’s GDP. The world will be watching what outcomes the most extensive and the most influential economic and trade cooperation mechanism in the Asia- Pacific will achieve.
