Obama: Trump will maintain US relationships

11-18-2016 21:19 BJT

Outgoing US President Barack Obama told EU leaders Donald Trump will maintain America's strategic relationships around the world when he takes office in January.

Obama made the remarks at a conference in the German capital Berlin, as part of his final trip of Europe. He's been meeting with the leaders of Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Spain.

Obama expressed optimism that Trump would shift his positions on foreign policy. During the presidential campaign, Trump indicated he would seek a rapprochement with Russia.

He also criticized the NATO alliance, saying it was out of date and costing the United States too much money.

Obama urged EU states to remain united despite issues like migration, terrorism, and the UK's vote to quit the bloc.
