Haiti's electoral council tells candidates to accept results

11-21-2016 15:30 BJT

Haitians have finally voted after months of delays. Sunday's polls were generally smooth. It was a repeat of elections last October, the results of which were annulled due to allegations of cheating. This year, 27 candidates ran for office and there were a number of reports of voting fraud. But local election observers drew a broadly positive picture of the process. The vote count is expected to take 10 days. The electoral council says candidates should accept the official results and avoid premature announcements.

Haiti's electoral council president Leopold Berlanger said, "The electoral decree does not allow anyone except the Electoral Council to publish results. We ask that the decree be respected. Whether it is the political parties, the candidates, or other organizations in society, no matter what the sector-- we want them to respect the decree."
