China and New Zealand have agreed to start formal negotiations to advance their free trade agreement. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said Monday that the upgrade would ensure that the existing agreement takes into account the FTAs that China has negotiated with other trading partners since 2008.

The initial round of negotiations would begin in the first half of 2017. Among the issues that would be covered include technical barriers to trade, e-commerce, and the environment.
