The Chinese foreign ministry responded to this latest development by urging for peace and development on the Korean peninsula, adding that it hoped the pact wouldn't destabilize the region further.

"The relevant countries still stick to the Cold War mentality, and strengthen their intelligence and the military co-operation. This will increase the opposition and confrontation on the peninsula, bringing new insecurity and instability to North-east Asia," said Geng Shuang, spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry.

"This is not in keeping with the trend of our times, for peace and development, and is not in keeping with the common interests of countries in the region."
