Merkel unhappy about possible TPP demise

11-23-2016 21:35 BJT

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed her unhappiness about the possible demise of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, after US President-elect Donald Trump said he planned to withdraw the United States from the deal.

Her remarks came in a speech to the German parliament, although Merkel did not name Trump directly.

"I will tell you honestly: I am not happy that the Trans-Pacific agreement will now probably not become a reality. I don't know who will benefit from that — I want to hold back with predictions. I only know one thing: there will be other trade agreements, and they won't have the standards that this agreement and the anticipated Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement have," she said.
