The Syrian Army announced Tuesday the formation of a Fifth Army Corps. The unit is composed of volunteers and aims to put an end to terrorism across the country.

“In response to the rapidly changing conditions, consolidating the existing combat achievements and meeting the need to end terrorism in Syria, the command of the Syrian army and armed forces now announce the establishment of the Fifth Army Corps. The corps consists of volunteers and will carry out anti-terrorism missions,” said Syrian Army spokesman Ali Mayhoub.

The spokesman also noted that the new corps will work with other troops of the Syrian army with support from allies. Syrian citizens can join the new formation in any province, but volunteers must be physically fit and have already finished compulsory military service.

The Syrian Army has been engaged in battles against an array of rebel groups for more than five years, including the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and ISIL.
