To mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, a multimedia exhibition, which features a total of 37 short films on Shakespeare’s plays, has opened at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. The free exhibition is also part of the celebrations for the center’s one-year anniversary.

Titled “The Complete Walk,” the multimedia exhibition is a journey through Shakespeare’s plays 400 years since his death.

Titled "The Complete Walk", the multimedia exhibition is a journey through William Shakespeare's plays 400 years since his death.

It features 37 10-minute films, one for each play. Each film is a blend of existing Shakespeare’s Globe footage and brand new material shot on locations with particular historical and narrative resonance across Europe, including Hampton Court Palace for Henry VIII, The Tower of London for Richard III, Westminster Abbey for Henry IV, and Kronborg Castle in Denmark for Hamlet.

Featuring James Norton, Simon Russell Beale, Dominic West, and many more actors, the cast list is as impressive as the scenery.

Lucy Watkins, Counselor of the Culture and Education Section of British Embassy in China, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition on Sunday.

“This was the original complete walk, a project initiated by Shakespeare’s Globe in London to celebrate the scale and reach of Shakespeare's imagination, life and legacy,” said Watkins.

“I’m very happy to see this fantastic project has now come to Beijing, taking the form of a multimedia exhibition, held in the state-of-art building, Tianqiao performing arts center and free to the public for over a month.”

Commissioned by Shakespeare’s Globe, the project was first shown on massive screens along the banks of the Thames in London in April.

The Tianqiao Performing Arts Center now brings it to Beijing, not only to pay tribute to Shakespeare, but also as part of the celebrations for the center’s one-year anniversary.

“Activities are being held around the world to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. So we bring this exhibition to Beijing,” said Li Jing, Deputy General Manager, Tianqiao Performing Arts Center.

“We hope that this exhibition can serve as a window to Shakespeare’s works for visitors, so that they want to know more through these short films. And to help them better understand the playwright and his works, we have invited artists to create sculptures and instalments for this exhibition.”

Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, a modern theater complex in Southern Beijing, opened on November 20, 2015. A series of shows will follow to celebrate its one-year anniversary.

The free multimedia exhibition runs through December 25.
