What happens when you combine sophistication with athleticism? Something from Stella McCartney right? Perhaps this time the result is the latest collaboration between Italian sportswear house FILA and designer Jason Wu. Julian Waghann has more from the catwalk of the latest 2017 Spring/Summer collection in Beijing.

Simple lines dominating the 2016 collection give way to floral prints for the 2017 Spring/Summer collection. There's plenty of movement and vitality with just the right amount of Jason Wu sophistication.

Red and yellow add a splash of color to the new collection via bold geometric shapes.

"Graphic, print and color, I think those things are really important in the collaboration. That's something I'm introducing to the FILA family. In their regular lines, there's not so much print and graphic play. With my ready-to-wear collection, there's always a very bold sense of graphic," said Jason Wu.

This is the second year that the designer is collaborating with FILA.

In addition to his own namesake label, the designer has also launched a brand new line, Grey, named after his favorite color and meant to offer an affordable alternative to the sister line.

The FILA collaboration takes the relaxed sophistication of the GREY line even further, all the while maintaining the classic FILA DNA.

"When FILA asked me to collaborate two years ago, I thought it was very surprising, because what I do intrinsically is very dressed up, it's very glamorous. The kind of womenswear I create is very sophisticated. It's quite far from an athletic brand. But when I heard about the project, I thought it was quite interesting to take what I do and interpret it in a way that I haven't thought about before," said Jason Wu.

For this season, the designer has chosen a verdant backdrop juxtaposed with marble floors for this collection.

The simplicity of the collection however is an understatement to the leap the designer has made in this new collaboration... which demanded that he switch to working with a lot of technical materials as well as experimenting with different ways of bonding and laser cutting.

"One interesting thing about the FILA collaboration is that I'm working with fabrics that I'm not used to working with. It's completely different, because it's much more performance driven, lifestyle driven and it's a lot more technical," said Jason Wu.

And the result of all the research and labor is relaxed sophistication from FILA that you can wear with sportive confidence.
