Green Party's Jill Stein files for vote recount in Wisconsin

11-27-2016 10:33 BJT

United States Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein has formally requested a recount of votes in Wisconsin. Stein said she also planned to request recounts in the states of Pennsylvania and Michigan.

"There's not something we are pointing to say that this is wrong in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. What we are saying is there is enough peripheral evidence to warrant that our system should be investigated," said George Martin, member of Wisconsin Green Party's Coordinating Council.

Wisconsin has never conducted a presidential recount before. The recount would likely begin next week and include a rigorous examination of all ballots. Federal deadlines require the state to complete the recount by December 13th. Wisconsin officials estimate the process could cost as much as 1 million US dollars.

Stein's campaign has been raising money through online appeals since Tuesday to cover the costs of recounts, with 5.2 million US dollars raised as of Friday afternoon.

The deadline for requesting a recount in Pennsylvania is Monday. Michigan's deadline is Wednesday.
