The defense and foreign ministries of China and Myanmar have held talks in the Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw.

The talks took place under a new ‘Two plus Two’ high level consultation mechanism. Both sides agreed to work together to maintain peace and stability along their 2,000-plus kilometer borders.

“Myanmar’s military has effectively brought the clashes under control and the tens of thousands of Myanmar nationals fleeing to the Chinese side will hopefully be able to return home soon. The meeting today also sends a clear message that both China and Myanmar are capable of restoring peace and stability in the conflict area,” said Chinese vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin.
