In Uganda, at least 55 people have been killed in fierce fighting between security forces and a separatist militia linked to a tribal king. Police said fighters connected to Rwen-zu-zur-u kingdom's royal guard attacked security forces in the western town of Kasese.

A spokesman for the monarchy said the situation is still volatile because the government accuses the kingdom of training militias. The Rwen-zu-zur-u monarchy began as a separatist movement and its people, the Ba-kon-zo, sought autonomy in 1962. The resulting bloody conflict was settled in 1982. The government recognized the kingdom in 2009, but sporadic clashes have continued.
