The 2016 Formula One season ended on Sunday much as the last two, with a Mercedes driver running away with the title. But instead of Lewis Hamilton claiming the trophy for a third consecutive time, it was his teammate Nico Rosberg capturing his first championship. But it wasn't without a fight, and Hamilton even defied pit orders to sought to pressure Rosberg in the hopes of forcing the German off the podium. Some have criticized the Brit, but others praised him for turning a potentially boring race into an exciting finish.

Now the championship all came down the last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi. Rosberg held a 12 point lead over Hamilton going in so in order to retain his title, Hamilton needed to finish first and Rosberg out of the top three. Hamilton led from the pole and could have pulled away, but instead slowed down to allow other drivers a chance to catch Rosberg and perhaps pass him or force him into a mistake. Mercedes ordered Hamilton to speed up, but the Brit refused, and team boss Toto Wolff admits he's in two minds about whether to punish Hamilton or allow his drivers more freedom to compete.
