South Korea President Park Geun-hye says she will resign if parliament decides she should.

The comments were made in her third televised address ahead of a parliamentary vote on whether to impeach her over the scandal involving her friend Choi Soon-sil. She said she would resign if parliament ensured a smooth transfer of power.

Opponents said the statement was a tactic to derail impeachment efforts. If parliament does pass the motion, Park will immediately be suspended and her prime minister will take over as an interim head of government.

"I will let parliament decide everything about my future including the shortening of my term. I will step down from my position according to the law once a way is found to pass on the administration in a stable manner that will minimise political unrest and vacuum after ruling and opposition parties' discussion," Park said.
