China's 24 solar terms added to UNESCO heritage list

UNESCO has inscribed China’s “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The U.N. body is currenly on a five-day session in Ethiopia. And the decision of inscribing the Chinese heritage came on Wednesday.

The decision came on Wednesday during the 11th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Addis Ababa.

Representatives of 24 States Parties to UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, have been examining 37 requests for inscription on the Representative List.

The 24 Solar Terms is said to embody the concepts of respect for nature, and harmony between man and nature.

“It is a very memorable and exciting day to Chinese people. China’s ‘The Twenty-Four Solar Terms’ inscribed the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity successfully. It is now recognized by the UNESCO. It is a major breakthrough,” said Ma Shende, Department of Cultural Heritage.

This is the third inscribed element submitted by China that falls in a domain of knowledge and practices, concerning nature and universe, as defined in the 2003 convention.
