In South Korea, three major opposition parties have filed an impeachment motion against President Park Geun-hye. It will be put to a vote in the National Assembly on December ninth.

The motion was supported by 171 lawmakers in the 300-seat legislature. But the support of nearly 30 members of Park's ruling Saenuri party is needed, in order to secure the two-thirds majority needed to impeach the president. If passed, the motion would go to the Constitutional Court for approval, a process which could take up to six months.

Last week, Park said she would leave it to the National Assembly to decide on her resignation, as weekly mass protests dragged on for a fifth week. Organisers claimed up to 1.5 million people braved freezing temperatures to rally last Saturday.
