Uzbeks are voting to elect a president to replace late strongman Islam Karimov.  Observer delegations from various countries and international organizations have conducted an investigation on the preparatory work. China commends Uzbekistan's efforts.

"The successful and smooth completion of the preparatory work in such a short period of time is an organizational guarantee for a successful presidential election. We highly affirm the contribution made by the Central Election Commission, local election commissions, leaders and all staff members," said Gao Yusheng, head of observer delegation from China.

Gao Yusheng said China is paying close attention to the Uzbek presidential poll.  He also said he hopes that ties can be advanced with the joint efforts of China and the new president.

About 21 million people are expected to vote at some 9,300 polling stations throughout the Muslim-majority Central Asian country.  Interim leader  Shavkat Mirziyoyev is widely expected to win a five-year term from a field of four candidates.
