The sixth International Copyright Expo in China is now underway in the southern city of Guangzhou. The event is held every two years. The expo aims to highlight the work that's been done to protect intellectual property rights.

The expo began off with an awards ceremony. A number of individuals and groups won the copyright awards, the country’s highest level of its kind. Their works include the famous internet novel <Nirvana in Fire>, <The English-Chinese Dictionary> and the Chinese film<Wolf Totem>.

"I’m really surprised by the awards. Usually copyright is very technical, now it becomes glamour and feast."said Sylvie Forbin,World Intellectual Property Organization.

The expo is the largest national event dedicated to the copyright industry. Exhibits featuring Chinese traditional culture were in the spotlight.

"We came to the expo to call for the protection of intellectual property. We aim to maximize social benefits of these art forms’ copyright."

"There are 6 sections displaying different kinds of items, trying to raise people’s awareness of copyright protection. Here you can not only take a very close look at some traditional Chinese art works, but also to experience new technologies as well as digital devices."said He Weiwei.

China is making progress in its intellectual property sector. According to the national copyright administration, the copyright industry accounts for over 7% of the country’s GDP in 2014, double the average level for a developing country.

"We stepped up our efforts to protect copyright, especially on the internet. Each year we have a different focus. Last year we cracked down on online music piracy, with great success. Next we will release blacklists and white lists for internet literature works."said Yu Cike, director general of copyright department,National Copyright Administration of China.

The expo lasts till Dec. 7, and it includes a number of forums held.
