Japanese media say the country’s livestock and agriculture industries will suffer as a result of TPP. Many farmers are afraid of what this means for their livelihood.

“Japan has an oversupply of locally-produced rice. Farmers are cutting production because rice prices are also dropping. They can hardly sustain their production. With the TPP, more rice will be imported into our market, and that will be a big blow to Japanese farmers,” a farmer said.

“TPP is coming into force and there’s nothing I can do about it. I hope someone will figure out a way to cope with it. Generally the deal is not good for us,” said a cow farmer of Nagano Prefecture.
