For weeks, over a million South Koreans have taken to the streets, calling on their president to step down. It all began on October 24th.

JTBC television announced they found a tablet computer containing files of speeches President Park Geun-Hye had yet to give.

Choi Soon-sil, a friend of Park, but not a government employee, had edited some key speeches.

Park soon admitted asking Choi for advice, and apologized.

"I deeply apologise to our nation," she said.

But her apology was not accepted. As time went by, the scandal got bigger and bigger, and so did the protests.

It wasn't long before Park's top aides resigned, cabinet ordered reshuffle, and Choi, arrested.

Choi is accused of leveraging her relationship with Park to coerce local firms into donating large sums to dubious non-profit foundations.

The amount runs to tens of millions of US dollars, and involve some of South Korea's biggest companies, such as: Lotte, SK and Samsung.

Park tried to calm furious citizens: ... more apologies, expressing willingness to cooperate in investigations, compromises in naming new prime minister etc. But none of these prevented her approval ratings falling to the lowest in South Korean history.

On November 29, Park asked parliament to decide how and when she should quit. But opposition lawmakers dismissed the move as a ploy to buy time and avoid impeachment.

No matter how this will play out, it's not going to end quickly.
