China and Japan have agreed to work toward a special communication mechanism for air and maritime affairs. The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting in the southern Chinese city of Haikou.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues related to the East China Sea. They agreed to cooperate more to crack down on smuggling and drug trafficking, as well as in fisheries management.
