U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has made some surprising remarks about the Taiwan question again. He said the U.S. did not necessarily have to stick to its long-standing position that recognizes Beijing as the sole representative of China.

On Fox News Sunday, Trump said he fully understands the “One China” policy, but he questioned whether the U.S. should continue its decades of tradition unless Beijing makes concessions on trade and other issues. This follows objections from China over his decision to accept a telephone call from Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen earlier this month.

China urged the U.S. to honor its commitment to the One-China policy and properly handle Taiwan-related issues to avoid any unnecessary disturbance to the bigger picture of the China-U.S. relationship.

The White House later reaffirmed its One-China stance.
