The Chinese Foreign Ministry has urged US president-elect Donald Trump to treat the Taiwan issue in a cautious and stable manner. This comes after Trump's latest remarks regarding the One-China policy.

"The Taiwan issue relates to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also involves China's core interests. Sticking to the "One China" policy is the political foundation in developing China-US ties. If such a foundation is disturbed or violated, the healthy and stable relations between China and the US, and cooperation in the two countries' major fields are out of the question. We urge the new US government and leader to fully understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, to continue to stick to the "One-China" policy, and the principles of the three joint communiques, and to handle the Taiwan issue in a cautious and stable manner to avoid any disturbance or harm to the bigger picture of  China-US relations," said Geng Shuang, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Donald Trump said the US did not necessarily have to stick to its long-standing position that recognizes Beijing as the sole representative of China. On "Fox News Sunday", Trump said he fully understands the "One China" policy, but questioned whether the US should continue its decades of tradition, unless Beijing makes concessions on trade and other issues. This follows objections from the Chinese mainland over his decision to accept a telephone call from Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen earlier this month. The White House later reaffirmed its stance on the One-China policy.
