Timeline of the battle for Aleppo

12-14-2016 19:13 BJT

The battle for Aleppo between Syrian government and rebel forces began in the summer of 2012, with the government controlling the west of the city and rebels occupying eastern districts. Government forces advanced in Aleppo in March this year and completed the first full-scale siege in the city in July. Since September 22nd, armies started major air strikes in eastern districts, taking back northeastern regions and parts of the city center.

Throughout most of October, Syria and Russia suspended airstrikes to open up 8 humanitarian corridors. Since November 25th, Syrian armies started using tactics to separate rebels and advance their siege from the north. And by Tuesday, an estimated 98 percent of the city has been retaken by Syrian government forces.
