Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has won a second vote of confidence in parliament, paving the way for his government to lead until new elections.

The Senate voted 169-99 on Wednesday, a day after the measure easily passed the parliament’s lower chamber. With the support of parliament, Gentiloni can now represent his country in the European Council summit later on Thursday.

The prime minister says his priorities are to stimulate economic growth, create more jobs, rebuild quake-hit regions, address banking crisis and help lawmakers craft a new electoral law.

Gentiloni’s nomination came after his predecessor Matteo Renzi resigned following the defeat in a referendum that seeks constitutional reform.
