Japan has lodged an official protest against South Korea after the country conducted military exercises in waters around the Dokdo Islands, known in Japan as the Takeshima Islands.

A spokesman for Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country had lodged a formal complaint to the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo. South Korean officials said that the exercise was designed to guard Dokdo from unlawful intrusion by mobilizing its warships and maritime patrol planes.
