British Prime Minister Theresa May reaffirmed a commitment to developing trade and investment with China during talks Tuesday with China's top diplomat, State Councillor Yang Jiechi.
Britain has been a popular choice for Chinese investment, with many firms seeing the UK as a springboard for the far larger European Union market. But those plans could be at risk due to concerns surrounding what kind of market access Britain will have after voting to leave the EU.
Diplomatic sources say China has been seeking clarity from Britain about its Brexit plans. Meanwhile, May also voiced support for greater cooperation with China on security and climate change during her talks with Yang.
