The prime suspect in the Berlin truck attack — is dead. But Germany continues to keep intense security in place across the capital.

Shot dead in Milan early on Friday morning. Not as the result of an international manhunt. But after police returned fire during a random identity check.

Italy’s Interior Minister was the first to confirm it.

"After an investigation, it was found that the person that was killed is, without any shadow of a doubt, Anis Amri, the presumed suspect in the Berlin lorry attack," said Marco Minniti.

Footage has emerged of that terrible moment … and the seconds after — as pedestrians fled in horror.

In the aftermath, German police thought they had their man — they were questioning a 23-year- old Pakistani national who they later released without charge.

German broadcaster RBB uncovered this still image from a police surveillance camera outside a nearby Berlin mosque a few hours later.  — claiming that it was a possibly injured Anis Amri. Investigators are denying it.

Police raided it shortly after. If he was there, he had moved on to Paris, it seems, and then possibly by train to Milan. Leaving unanswered questions: if his identity documents were found in the truck, why did authorities not release his identity immediately? And could that have given Amri time to cross two open Schengen borders apparently undetected?

And — did he have help? Islamic State’s propaganda wing released this video hours after Amri’s death. He’s pledging his allegiance to them.

German authorities aren’t letting their guard down.

"The threat level regarding terror attacks remains high. It did not change. And the high security measures taken by authorities remain in place for the time being," said Thomas De Maiziere, German Interior Minister.

On Friday morning, police arrested two men, brothers born in Kosovo, suspected of planning to blow up this shopping center in west Germany… a sign of the heightened sense of alert throughout the country.

In Berlin, a memorial concert at the Brandenburg Gate — themed “Berlin together”… surrounded by a ring of steel.
