Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says his country will not allow a new state to be established in northern Syria.

Erdogan also reiterated his call to establish a "terror-free safe zone" in the region for his country's safety.

Ankara launched a military campaign in northern Syria in August, mainly to prevent the Syrian Kurds from forming an autonomous region or an independent state.

Turkey worries that might set a precedent for its own Kurdish population. This comes as Turkish forces and their Syrian allies have been fighting together to retake the northern Syrian city of al-Bab from ISIL.
