NPC deputies like Li Guangyu are now busy presenting their motions and suggestions. Days before NPC deputy Li Guangyu left for Beijing for the Two Sessions, the 53-year-old held a final seminar with 30 school children in Henan province.
He wanted to gather more information for his motions and suggestions, which will be presented at the annual NPC meetings.
One of his concerns is if English should be a compulsory course in primary and middle school. He believes the Chinese people’s mania for learning English has threatened the study of the Chinese language and reduced playtime for students.

“I think we should even remove English as a compulsory test in the college entrance examination. This is the aspiration of many students when I did research,” Li said.
This year, Li has submitted two motions and seven suggestions – all of them educational issues. They were derived from his research in 2016, when he sat down to listen to students, officials and the people concerned. That’s to ensure that what he presents is in the peoples’ interests.

During the Two Sessions, final decisions reached will affect lives all across the country. It’s therefore essential for NPC deputies to put careful thought in the motions they present, so as to ensure that change will be brought where it is most needed.
