China's defense budget is one of the top issues that appeals to foreign media during the Two Sessions, with some questioning its accuracy and transparency.

Some have claimed the defense spending growth of around 7 percent comes amid, quote, "outside meddling in territorial disputes in the East and South China seas".

The media says China's defense budgets are often "significantly higher" than official figures. They have also complained that Beijing provides too little information on the distribution of the money spent on its national defense.
