The 19th South Korean presidential election is set to replace impeached Park Geun-hye on May 9th.

On Tuesday, an aide of former President Park won the nomination of the conservative party. Yoo Seong-min received nearly 63 percent of the vote in the primary of the Bareun Party.

The party split from Park's then-ruling party in the wake of her impeachment over a corruption scandal. And, Moon Jae-in from the Democratic Party of Korea is gaining the upper hand in the presidential candidate nomination contest.

The main opposition party's leader is advocating for the repeal of South Korea's national security laws, which have historically been used by right-wing factions to restrict and oppress political opponents.
