The detained Samsung Group vice chairman Jay Y. Lee has arrived at a Seoul court for the opening of a trial which is part of a wider investigation into the influence-peddling scandal involving former South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

The company has been accused of donating millions of dollars to non-profit foundations operated by Choi Soon-sil, a friend of former President Park Geun-hye, in exchange for government favours. Choi also appeared in court, and faces charges ranging from abuse of power to extorting money from Samsung with the aid of Park.

The scandal engulfed Park's administration and culminated in her ousting last month. She was arrested and jailed last week as authorities continue to investigate the corruption allegations.
