American Chamber of Commerce has released its annual American Business in China White Paper. The white paper has long been considered the go-to assessment of foreign companies' conditions in the country.

The paper says in the year 2017, more than 80 percent of companies felt less welcome than before in China. It also says more than half of the surveyed companies feel they are being treated unfairly.

The White paper cites unclear regulations, rising operational costs and increasing protectionism as the top business concerns for foreign companies in the China. That said, China is bettering its business environment, as the World Bank's gauge for 2017 says China ranks 78th worldwide in ease of doing business, which is a slight climb from the year before.
