BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Beijing on Tuesday launched a campaign against pollution, especially water pollution, after a central government inspection team revealed many problems.

The 100-day campaign will combine the efforts of environmental protection, public security, urban management, land and resources, housing and urban-rural development, water, safety supervision and agricultural departments, among others, to deal with illegal discharge of pollutants via hidden pipes, wells and pits.

Sewage and garbage processors, major industrial companies and waterways will be inspected, the municipal environmental protection bureau said in a statement.

Production, processing, storage, transport, sales and emission of coal and oil products will also be inspected to curb air pollution, said the statement.

Land and resources and safety supervision departments will check ore tailings to eliminate illegal discharge of waste.

The campaign is in response to an inspection carried out by the central government late last year, in which only one out of 19 sewage waterways in the city was found to have been processed in 2016.

The team also found construction on a sewage treatment plant had been delayed, leaving around 50,000 tonnes of waste water discharged directly to the Nansha River, Changping District, every day.
