The world's largest amphibious aircraft, the China-made AG600, is getting closer to its inaugural flight. The craft has passed its first taxiing test in the southern city of Zhuhai.

The taxiing test is one of the last preparations. Other tests and check-ups are also underway.

The builder, China Aviation Industry General Aircraft, says the AG600 will attempt its maiden flight over land later this month, and on water in the second half of this year. It will be mainly used for maritime rescue, forest fire fighting, and marine environment monitoring and protection.

The AG600 is 37 meters long and has a maximum take-off weight of over 50 tons. It can collect 12 tons of water in 20 seconds, and transport up to 370 tons of water on a single tank of fuel.
