Sales of whisky in China are now twelve times higher than they were a decade ago.

That's according to The Telegraph, who also report that the Asia Pacific region is now responsible for two thirds of the consumption of spirits in the world.

Sales of whisky in China are now twelve times higher than they were a decade ago.

The news follows a series of recent positive stories about the trade in alcoholic beverages between China and Europe.

For example, only yesterday, we reported that the last three months have seen a five percent rise in the volume of wine imports to China.

When it comes to higher value beverages such as whisky, it seems that Brexit may also bring good news.

As we revealed in 2016, since the vote on June 23rd to leave the EU, the pound has dropped in value significantly, making UK exports far more competitive, and given that 90% of all Scotch whisky sales are to the export market, this has lead to a real boost for Scottish distillers.

More than 500 million bottles are exported from Britain every year,  worth around 1.7 billion pounds. The principle markets in the first half of 2016 were the United States (57.4 million), France (93.1 million) and Singapore (9.6 million), with total exports equivalent to 533 million bottles.

David Williamson, communications director for the Scotch Whisky Association, said: “Because of the relative weakness of the pound we’re certainly getting anecdotal reports back from our member companies that has helped to boost exports.”
