The Chinese bike sharing company, Mobike, is teaming up with a leading US chemical firm to carry out joint research and development into creating more eco-friendly bikes.

It's signed a strategic partnership deal with the American DOW Chemical Company's China branch to access its resources to find ways of improving the user experience and promoting the country's Green & Shared economy, reports ifeng.com.

Mobike's latest model, released in April, was based on DOW's PU (Polyurethane) material, resulting in a 20% reduction in weight.

The move follows Mobike's integration with China's largest solar cell manufacturer Hanergy Holding Group on May 2, and a strategic partnership hook up with the China Recycling Development Co., Ltd. on May 4.

Dubbed one of the world's largest bicycle operators, Mobike has entered the market in over 60 cities around the world, offering over 3.65 million bikes with an average of more than 20 million daily rides.

The company seeks to "solve 'the last kilometre' issue, to relieve traffic pressure, reduce environmental pollution, and help make a better city", said Mobike founder Hu Weiwei at the signing ceremony.
