MEXICO CITY, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A prison riot in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas has left three police officers and four prisoners dead, the state government said on Wednesday.

Tamaulipas' security spokesperson said that six police and seven prisoners had also been injured in the riot in the city of Ciudad Victoria, which lasted from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

A security check inside the prison by state police began around 4 p.m. local time but it developed into violence. The check was carried out as authorities believed rival gang members inside the prison had forbidden objects.

The spokesperson, Luis Alberto Rodriguez, told Milenio TV that prisoners had guns in their possession but could not confirm that they used them against the police.

Rodriguez also could not confirm the cause of the death of the seven victims and the 13 wounded.

During the riot, authorities also evacuated surrounding businesses and buildings, including a school and a restaurant.

On Wednesday morning, federal police were called to back in their state colleagues, with the situation being declared under control at 11 a.m. local time.

Police have had to intervene four times at the prison in recent months, including on March 22 when 28 prisoners escaped through a tunnel.
