The subject of the 2017 survey is about Chinese movies and its national image. The survey target is audiences of North America. The organizer Paneland market research and consulting company released 1,600 copies of questionnaires online and received 1,520 responses; 1,208 respondents were from the United States and 312 were Canadians.

According to the survey, Chinese movies can reflect a positive image of China, serving as an important medium for North Americans to understand the country. Secondly, More than 70 percent of respondents have watched at least one Chinese movie in the past three years, 40 percent of them had watched more than five Chinese movies in the same time-frame. The most popular types of Chinese movies in the North America market are war and action movies, while Kongfu movies have gotten less influential. Chinese movies have generated the most recognition among African Americans as well as Chinese Americans, and are more popular with audiences between age 25 to 34. Last but not the least, weak marketing promotions are the main obstacle for selling Chinese movies to North America consumers, while Chinese-English translation mistakes and different acting methods have also hindered North American audiences from better understanding Chinese movies.

The survey report was published in the journal "Modern Communication" in January 2018. It was directed by Huang Huilin and conducted by Sun Zixun, Wang Chao and Yang Zhuofan.

AICCC was established jointly by the Beijing Normal University and International Data Group (IDG) to promote a global understanding of Chinese culture. This is the seventh survey AICCC conducted to investigate the international communications of Chinese movies since 2011. The Film bureau of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China says the survey is an important reference for China's movie industry.
